Opening of a Speech and Language Unit

Dear Parents, Carers & Governors,

I am writing to inform you that the school is commencing a 30‑day consultation from today regarding a proposal to establish a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision within our school. The purpose of this consultation is to ensure you are aware of the proposal and to invite any feedback or comments you may wish to share. We welcome responses from all parents, carers and governors during the consultation period

We are in the process of adding a 10 place SEN Unit for Speech, Language and Communication Needs to Mill Lane Primary School. These 10 places would be in addition to the number of pupils already in our school, so it will not impact on numbers available for children in our community.

All children attending the Speech and Language Unit will have an EHCP and placement in the unit will be determined in collaboration with the Local Authority. There will be strict entry criteria.

The children will receive specialist teaching and have access to a small group, modified learning environment, with the goal of improving their educational outcomes.

The addition of this provision would further enhance our school offer and enrich our already inclusive school environment.

The school has been awarded additional funding for this provision, including funding for a purpose built classrooms, toilets and a playground. The building work is due to commence in May 2026, and further information will be shared about this closer to the date.

We will start intaking children in September 2026, and the building work is expected to be finished at the start of 2027.

The above information will also be posted on our website www.milllane.org.uk .

If you have any queries, comments or would like further information, please contact the school office by phone or email office@milllane.org.uk .

Kind regards,

Sue Skillcorn
