Year 5

Year 5

A very warm welcome from Mrs Cook, Miss Latcham and Mrs Akhtar and all of the children in our class.

You can find out more about what is happening in Year 5 below.

Our Curriculum

In Year 5, we follow the National Curriculum for subjects, including English, Maths and Science.

English

This term we are writing Instructions, a Narrative, a Newspaper Report and a Factfile, which are all based on our Topic work Pharaohs. As part of our English lessons we are reading The Phoenix Code.

Our key author is Michael Morpurgo. Each child can take a Michael Morpurgo book home to read for their own enjoyment.

School reading books, which are used to support children’s level of reading, should be read regularly and brought into school daily. School reading books are changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that you read these books with your child at home to support their learning in school. Please remember to write a comment!

Maths

Year 5 Maths lessons follow the Big Maths scheme of work. Lessons are taught daily, and include Counting, Learn It’s, It’s Nothing New and Calculation or Column Method sessions. We also learn about Wider Maths which includes Shape, Amounts, Fractions and Data.

The children also have the opportunity to complete online Maths activities.

Topic

Our Autumn term Topic is Pharaohs where we are learning all about Ancient Egypt. As part of our Topic we have visited the Great North Museum and taken part in a Mummification workshop.

Science

This term we are learning about Animals including Humans and Forces.

PE

PE sessions take place every Thursday afternoon. Children should have suitable footwear in school. For their own safety, children must not wear any jewellery during PE activities.

Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in an After School Club on a Wednesday and a Lunchtime Club on a Monday.

The after school club finishes at 4:15pm.

Year 5 have also enjoyed tag rugby, indoor athletics, sports leader training, scavenger hunt and a six week block of yoga.

Homework

Homework is set regularly in Year 5 to consolidate our learning at home. Each week, we complete one piece of Maths or English homework. Homework is sent home each Wednesday and must be completed and returned by the following Monday.

We also have spellings to practise and must complete our reading records regularly. Spelling lessons take place each Wednesday and homework is sent following the lesson. Spellings must be completed and returned the following Wednesday.

Year 5 have also taken part in Bikeability where they learned how to ride safely on roads.

As part of our PSHcE Currciulum, PCSO Eric Barrett hosts monthly workshops on issues to do with keeping safe.

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, Year 5 learnt and recited a poem on Anti-Bullying. Video link

Please keep in touch…

We know that children learn everywhere, all of the time. We would love to hear about what the children have been learning at home.

If your child has achieved something outside of school we would love to hear about it.

Children are encouraged to bring in photographs, medals, or anything of interest so that they can tell their classmates all about it!
