A very warm welcome from Mrs Cook, Miss Latcham and Mrs Akhtar and all of the children in our class.
You can find out more about what is happening in Year 5 below.
In Year 5, we follow the National Curriculum for subjects, including English, Maths and Science.
In Autumn, we are writing Instructions, a Scary Story, Newspaper Report and Fact File during our Pharaohs topic, and will be reading The Phoenix Code. In Spring, we will be writing Non Chronological Reports, a Story, a Biography and a Diary Entry during our Revolution topic, and we will be reading Street Child. In Summer, we will be writing a Fantasy Story, Recount of a Class Visit, Leaflet and a Letter during our Alchemy Island topic and we will be reading Tom’s Midnight Garden.
Our key author is Michael Morpurgo. Each child can take a Michael Morpurgo book home to read for their own enjoyment.
School reading books, which are used to support children’s level of reading, should be read regularly and brought into school daily. School reading books are changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that you read these books with your child at home to support their learning in school. Please remember to write a comment!
Year 5 Maths lessons follow the Big Maths scheme of work. Lessons are taught daily, and include Counting, Learn It’s, It’s Nothing New and Calculation or Column Method sessions. We also learn about Wider Maths which includes Shape, Amounts, Fractions and Data.
The children also have the opportunity to complete online Maths activities.
Our topics this year are Pharaohs, where we will learn all about Ancient Egypt, Revolution where we will learn all about Victorians, and Alchemy Island where we learn about geography and chemistry.
Our Science topics this year are Animals including Humans, Forces, Earth and Space, Living Things and their Habitats and Properties and Changes of Materials.
PE sessions take place every Thursday afternoon. Children should have suitable footwear in school. For their own safety, children must not wear any jewellery during PE activities.
Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in an After School Club on a Wednesday and a Lunchtime Club on a Monday.
The after school club finishes at 4:15pm.
Year 5 also have a block of swimming lessons to help us improve our skills and swimming style.
Homework is set regularly in Year 5 to consolidate our learning at home. Each week, we complete one piece of Maths or English homework. Homework is sent home each Wednesday and must be completed and returned by the following Monday.
We also have spellings to practise and must complete our reading records regularly. Spelling lessons take place each Wednesday and homework is sent following the lesson. Spellings must be completed and returned the following Wednesday.
As part of our PSHcE Currciulum, PCSO Eric Barrett hosts monthly workshops on issues to do with keeping safe.
Please keep in touch…
We know that children learn everywhere, all of the time. We would love to hear about what the children have been learning at home.
If your child has achieved something outside of school we would love to hear about it.
Children are encouraged to bring in photographs, medals, or anything of interest so that they can tell their classmates all about it!
