Curriculum Intent Statement

At Mill Lane Primary School, the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome different cultures, languages and religions within our school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.  We look for opportunities to make links across the curriculum, to look at a topic from a range of subject perspectives, to relate to those we teach as whole people.

Our Principles for Teaching and Learning

• All children are entitled to be engaged in their learning and to be active learners; discovering and finding out.
• All children are entitled to understand what they have achieved and know what to do to make progress.
• All children are entitled to be independent, enthusiastic and self-motivated learners; raising their own questions.
• All children are entitled to time to evaluate and reflect on their learning.
• All children are entitled to teaching that inspires their learning.
• All children are entitled to teaching that encourages them to be creative.
• All children are entitled to challenging lessons, and have opportunities to learn how to solve problems.
• All children are entitled to develop spiritually, morally and as members of our school and the wider community.
• All children are entitled to learn how to keep themselves safe within school and the wider community.

Community involvement is an essential part of our curriculum as we celebrate local traditions, learning new skills to enable the children to take an active role in events throughout the year.  Our pupils have a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
