Information for Year 5 Parents

Our Curriculum

In Year 5, we follow the National Curriculum for subjects, including English, mathematics and science.

Click this link to find out what we will be learning in Year 5.

Reading

School reading books, which are used to support children’s level of reading, should be read regularly and brought into school daily. School reading books are changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that you read these books with your child at home to support their learning in school. Please encourage your child to write a comment in their reading record about the character, storyline or what they are enjoying so far.

Our key author is Michael Morpurgo. Each child can take a Michael Morpurgo book home to read for their own enjoyment.

Each child is given a school reading books to take home each week. We change books routinely on Monday and Thursday. Please remind your child to remember to write and date their reading record book.  We would like the children to read at least three times per week. Every Monday or Tuesday, our children are encouraged to visit the school library.  Whilst they are there, they can choose a book to read for enjoyment.

Please ensure that your child’s book bag, reading book and reading record are sent to school every day.

Physical Education (P.E)

P.E. is on a Thursday afternoon and the children will require appropriate footwear in their PE bag at all times. The school will provide a PE kit for your child. If your child has their ears pierced they will need to be removed by your child, teachers cannot support your child with this. Can we ask for all uniform, including coats, shoes and outer clothing to be clearly named.  This not only helps the children with their independence, but it is their responsibility to look after their own possessions.

Year 5 also have a block of swimming lessons to help us improve our skills and swimming style. This year, the children will be going swimming for two weeks, after Christmas.

After School Clubs

Year 5 after school club is currently Multi-sports club on Wednesday after school. This club finishes promptly at 4:15pm. Please make sure your child has sensible shoes in school.

Year 5 may attend the lunchtime club on Tuesdays from 12.30-1pm.

Homework

Homework is set regularly in Year 5 to consolidate our learning at home. Each week, we complete one piece of mathematics or English homework.

Homework is sent home each Wednesday and must be completed and returned by the following Monday.

We also have spellings to practise and must complete our reading records regularly. Spelling lessons take place each Monday and homework is sent following the lesson. Spellings must be completed and returned the following Monday.

Please keep in touch…

We know that children learn everywhere, all of the time. We would love to hear about what the children have been learning at home.

If your child has achieved something outside of school we would love to hear about it.

Children are encouraged to bring in photographs, medals, or anything of interest so that they can tell their classmates all about it!
